COVID-19 FAQs

Mountain View School District COVID-19 response protocols are based on guidance and recommendations from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health (SBCDPH), and the Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC). MVSD has worked to incorporate direct guidance and recommendations into a set of protocols that govern how we operate daily. We regularly monitor for any changes in guidance and fully expect there will be adjustments to our protocols along the way during the school year.

The following Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) address common areas of concern from our District families.  We will continue to expand these FAQs over the course of the school year.

COVID Response Protocols

1.  How does the District determine a “close contact” with a positive COVID-19 case?

Department of Public Health guidance identifies “close contact” (direct exposure) as contact that is: (1) unmasked, (2) within 6 feet, and (3) for a duration of 15 minutes or longer.  Per this guidance, any student or employee who is in direct contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19 should quarantine for the required number of days from the date of the close contact.
 

2.  If a family member who lives with the student has COVID-19, what are the guidelines for the student's attending classes? Would the student need to quarantine and be tested before returning if they are asymptomatic?   

In any situation regarding exposure to a person who has tested positive for COVID-19, quarantining and/or testing would be determined by the level of exposure. Department of Public Health guidance identifies “close contact” (direct exposure) as contact that is (1) unmasked, (2) within 6 feet, and (3) for a duration of 15 minutes or longer.  

Per this guidance, any student who is in direct contact with a person at their home who has tested positive for COVID-19 should quarantine for the required number of days (which is 10 days from the date of close contact) before returning to school if they are not symptomatic of COVID-19.  The District does not require students to produce a negative test to return to school, only to complete the required quarantining period and to be symptom free for 24 hours.  This is the protocol for student and staff who have been directly exposed or who have been positive for COVID-19.
 

3.  Does the school offer COVID testing for students or have a location they can refer them to if the need arises to be tested?  

Yes.  Should the need arise the District has resources for providing testing to students and/or staff who have had close contact or direct exposure to COVID-19 on our school sites.
 

4.  If a student tests positive for COVID-19 during the year and must stay home for that time, are there arrangements in place for them to receive schooling from home for that period? Do those absences that resulted from required exclusion from school count against them?

Yes.  If a student tests positive for COVID-19 during the school year and therefore must be excluded from direct participation in the classroom, the District would support that student through our District-based independent study program during the period of their quarantine. In reference to the resulting absences, the dates that the student is enrolled and participating in our District-based independent study program, those absences would not count against them.
 

5.  If the student has cold-like symptoms, are they required to always get tested? If they have cold-like symptoms, but test negative for COVID-19, what are the guidelines? Do they just stay home for the duration of a fever? If they have no fever and test negative for COVID-19, but have other cold symptoms, are they expected to continue attending school or remain home for the duration of the illness?  

The District does not require testing of students or staff, just proper quarantining should the need arise. As is the case with any illness students may face, whether it be a cold, flu, or COVID-19, it is preferable that the student stay at home and recover during the contagious portion of the illness (the early days where they are exhibiting heavy symptoms). If students are demonstrating a fever and other COVID-19 symptoms, the District would recommend seeking medical attention regarding a possible COVID-19 infection, but would require that the student quarantine for the 10 days from the onset of symptoms and be free of fever and other COVID-19 symptoms for a period of 24 hours before returning to school. If students are demonstrating a fever but no other COVID-19 symptoms, then the student would need to stay home and not return to school until they are free of fever for a period of 24 hours. If a student has lingering cold symptoms, no fever, and has tested negative for COVID-19 they are able to return to school.
 

6.  If a child in the class is positive for COVID-19, will parents be notified? 

Parents will be notified if there is a positive COVID-19 case in their student’s classroom.  That notification will come from the Principal in the form of a letter informing parents of a positive COVID-19 case in the classroom.  These letters are sent to all parents in the classroom and indicated that if their student was determined to be in “close contact” (see FAQ #1) with the identified positive student, the parent would be contacted directly by the Principal for further information. 
 

7.  What happens if a student is exposed to a positive COVID-19 case in the classroom? Will the student have to be quarantined and tested if they have been exposed to that child? If so, will they receive alternative education for that period and will those absences from in-person negatively affect their attendance record?  

If a student is determined to be in close contact (see FAQ #1) with another student or staff member, they will be required to quarantine for the designated number of days. The District will provide parents with resources for COVID-19 testing if they wish, but will not require a negative test as a means for returning to school. Students who have quarantined will need to complete the quarantine period and be free of symptoms (primarily fever) for 24 hours before returning to school. If a student is required to quarantine due to exposure in the classroom, the student will be provided an alternative education program for the period of the quarantine through our district-based independent study. Regarding the absences, any student who is required to quarantine would not experience a negative affect their attendance record.
 

8.  Will there be some sort of dashboard available on the school or district site showing COVID-19 case numbers for students/staff? 

At this time, the District does not have a dashboard that identifies the number of positive COVID-19 cases of students and staff.  We report all confirmed positive cases to the County Department of Public Health as required by guidance.
 

9.  Are all the schools within the district following the same protocols?  

Yes.  These are District-wide protocols that should be followed at all school sites.  District protocols have been reviewed with our site administrators and support staff and COVID-19 is usually the top item on our agenda at our administrative meetings.  It is an ever-changing, ever-evolving issue that demands our constant attention. The District is continually reviewing and modifying protocols in order to create the safest possible environment for students and staff. This will continue throughout the year as the COVID-19 landscape changes.
 

10.  If a classroom or the whole school experiences large outbreaks, are there any plans in place for temporary hybrid or virtual learning until that resolves?  

If a classroom or entire school experiences an outbreak that requires a classroom or even site closure (per CDPH or SBCDPH guidelines) then yes, the district will provide a temporary/emergency virtual learning experience for students during the quarantine/closure period. However, once that period is complete students would return to in-person learning, as there are no state policies that would allow the District to stay in a virtual learning format long-term.
