Health Screenings
Vision & Hearing Overview:
In accordance with California Education Code Sections 49452–49455, all students shall receive vision and hearing screenings conducted by qualified school personnel. Additionally, middle school students will receive scoliosis screening in accordance with California Department of Education standards.
Screening Schedule:
- Hearing and vision screenings are conducted in kindergarten (or upon first entry into a California school), and in grades 2, 5, and 8. This is generally done by the first semester of school & notification of any failed results will be sent before winter break.
- Vision screenings include:
- Distance and near visual acuity tests
- Color vision (screened once for male students after grade 1)
Parental Waiver:
A parent/guardian may request to waive any evaluation by providing a certificate from an authorized healthcare provider documenting the results of an examination for the specific screening being waived.
Notification of Results:
If any deficiencies are identified, parents/guardians will receive written notice, including an explanation of the screening performed and the results.
Oral Health Overview:
California law, Education Code Section 49452.8 requires that children have an oral health assessment (dental check-up) by May 31st in either TK, Kinder, or 1st grade (whichever is his or her first year in public school). Assessments that have happened within 12 months before the child enters school also meet this requirement. The law specifies that the assessment must be done by a licensed dentist or other licensed or registered dental health professional.
Parents are required to take the Oral Health Assessment Form with them to their appointment and have the dentist complete Section 2 of the form. Parents are able to sign a waiver in lieu of having their child receive an oral health exam. Parents are to complete Section 3 of the Oral Health Assessment Form if they wish to be excused from the oral health exam requirement.
Mountain View School District partners with a Mobile Dental Hygienist Practice - The Friendly Flosser each spring to provide dental oral health screenings for all Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten students in the classroom. Information will be sent home with students prior to the screening date. These screenings are only visual (no instruments or treatment) and designed to be fun and engaging. Students are often more open to participating when they see their classmates included. Teachers are encouraged to incorporate a classroom lesson on dental hygiene to help reinforce healthy habits
In addition, The Friendly Flosser offers dental services—including sealants and cleanings—for students in all elementary grades on campus during school hours. Services are billed through your insurance. If your child does not have insurance or has already reached the maximum number of cleanings covered in a calendar year, Friendly Flosser will provide the services free of charge.
